"Neural Plasticity and Repair, from basic Neuroscience to Therapy"

ETH Central Campus, Lecture Hall F30 Audimax, Rämistrasse 101, 8092 Zurich

Welcome to the joint Symposium of the Zurich Neuroscience Center (ZNZ) and the NCCR "Neural Plasticity and Repair". This Symposium specifically highlights the topics and some of the main achievements of the NCCR Neuro, which will come to its end in May 2013. Thanks to the SNSF and the generous contributions of UZH and ETHZ, the NCCR Neuro has given a major boost to the Zurich and Swiss Neuroscience community. It also became a very visible role model for close and highly productive collaborations between basic scientists, clinicians and engineers, and locally between two universities, UZH and ETHZ, and several University Hospitals. Ten new professor and two new group leader positions as well as four technology platforms were created by the NCCR. Many of these positions and structures have become integral parts of our departments and institutes and their continuation will strengthen neuroscience research within the ZNZ as a long term heritage of the NCCR Neuro.

In spite of all the progress made, the challenge to understand the many complex functions of the nervous system and the human brain and its diseases remains huge. Technological innovations are continuously transforming neuroscience, opening up new dimensions and opportunities in research. The various disciplines within the neurosciences represent a vast open field for curious young researchers. This symposium offers an exciting overview of some particularly hot neuroscience topics and will boost the motivation of all of us.

Martin E. Schwab, Director NCCR Neuro

Jean-Marc Fritschy, Director ZNZ
